In theory, I’d love to surf. But in reality I’m too scared to learn. Only sport I’ve ever tried and genuinely believed I was going to die.
Mat, where were you during this death-defying surf lesson? I never thought I would surf, but I happened to go on vacation near one of the safest places to learn. So I figured I had to try.

It was a personal goal of mine to read The Watchmen before the movie came out. Luckily all the legal wrangling over the film gave me some extra time to do it.
I’d been wondering if they would be able to fit all the subplots into the movie. Now I know they weren’t.

Things I learned in Florianopolis, Brazil
It was nothing like what that NYT article described. I didn’t see a supermodel once! Also I saw no cavernous nightclubs, not that I went out of my way to find one.

Things that happened today
I went to two beaches.
I bought a pina colada from a man with a cart who was shin-deep in the waves, using a blender and everything.
I was mistaken for an Argentenian.
I tried to surf, but the waves were pretty small. I can’t stand up yet on the board but I did lay on the board and caught two little waves.
I got a bright red sunburn on my knee pits.
